A few trusted resources for gardening in the Uintah Basin, and a note on why we plant to zone 4.
Hardiness zone map
The US Department of Agriculture publishes a map showing the average annual extreme minimum temperatures in a region. In the Uintah Basin we show up as zone 5, but to be on the safe side we like to select plants that are hardy in zone 4, rated to about 30 below. There are other variables that affect plant growth too, including soil, moisture and how much sun a spot gets, but the map is a good guide to how winter-hardy a plant needs to be to survive here.

The USU Extension Service website is a wealth of regional information about gardening and agriculture. Publications on all kinds of topics can be read online or downloaded for later, and much of it is written for our exact climate.
