How much bark, soil or amendment do you actually need? Measure your bed, pick a depth, and this guide gives you the cubic feet and the number of bags to bring home.

Figure it by hand
- Step 1. Find the area's length and width. For example, 4 ft by 5 ft is 20 square feet.
- Step 2. Pick the depth you want and multiply the area:
- 1 inch thick: multiply the area by 0.08 (20 x 0.08 = 1.6 cubic feet)
- 2 inches thick: multiply by 0.16 (20 x 0.16 = 3.2 cubic feet)
- 3 inches thick: multiply by 0.24 (20 x 0.24 = 4.8 cubic feet)
- 4 inches thick: multiply by 0.32 (20 x 0.32 = 6.4 cubic feet)
- 5 inches or greater: multiply 0.08 by the total inches, then by the area (12 in x 0.08 x 20 = 19.2, or 20 bags)
- Step 3. Round up to find the number of bags you will need.
